These chargers do not require the devices being recharged
to be connected to the power source via a cable or electrical cord of any kind. Wireless chargers use three different methods of power transmission:
resonance charging, radio charging and inductive charging.
Resonance charging is used for devices that require large amounts of power such as
household appliances like vacuum cleaners, laptop computers, electric vehicles like golf carts or even the
newer electric automobiles. In resonance charging, a copper coil that is attached to a power source is
located in the sending unit. Another copper coil, attached to the device to be charged, serves as the
receiver for the electrical power. Both coils are set to the same electromagnetic frequency, which enables
energy to be transferred from one to the other. The method works best over short distances such as 2-6
meters.
Inductive charging is used for charging mid-sized items
such as cell phones, iPhone, iPods, MP3 players, bluetooth earbuds and PDAs. In inductive charging, an
adapter equipped with electrical contact points is attached to the device's back surface. When the device
requires a charge, it is placed on a matched conductive charging pad, which is plugged into a electrical
source such as a household electric socket.
Radio charging is typically used for recharging items with
small batteries and very low power requirements, such as watches, hearing aid batteries, cell
phoneaccessories, MP3 players and wireless computer accessories. Wireless radio charging works similar to
the transmission of television and radio broadcasts. A transmitter, plugged into an electrical source
generates radio waves on a specific frequency. When the receiver attached to the device is set to the
same frequency as the transmitter, the device's battery is recharged.
The famed scientist Nikola Tesla is considered the "Father
of Wireless Power Transmisison" and he was conducting successful experiments with this technology as
early as the late 1890's.
